Nature's Symphony

Well the ice has finally left. It went out last Monday. The loons have arrived and a mix of northern ducks were on there way to to the Artic. Sat out on the dock yesterday and listened to the best symphony ever. The grouse were pounding there chests in all directions. The wood peckers were keeping a timely beat and just about every bird was singing in harmony with one another. The beavers even chimed in with there tails slapping the water. Launched boat #1 yesterday and went for a quick tour of the lake. Wanted to drop a line in but time seems to be a shortage this time of year. Maybe this evening. Going to put out a few minnow traps today and see whats happening. We will be helping the MNR this week with the Walleye egg collection for our annual stocking program on our main lake. Waiting for 45 to 48 degree temps to collect the eggs. Waiting for the night temps to stay consisently above 0 in order for us to turn our water on without the pipes freezing at night. I included a picture of a windmill taken from Port Burwell, Ontario this week. Very impressive. A total of 66 windmills that will power 35,000 homes. I wnated to take this one back to the lodge but couldn't get it in the truck. I have included a picture of a moose taken to late. Lets see if you can find Waldo the moose.

Sunny & 75 Degrees

Another beautiful day today. Here are some pictures of the lake today. Breaking up sooner than my Sunday prediction. At this rate I think there wont be a spot of ice by morning. The wind has picked up moving the ice. Calling for rain the next few days so its gone for sure. Tuesday is a high of -2 C and snow. Great. Just what we want to see. Getting the boats ready today and waiting for launch. Cant wait to cast the first cast for the spring giant Northerns that are just comming off spawn. We dont keep any even though they taste awesome, well maybe one we'll keep but they sure are aggressive this time of year. Jump out of the water just like a bass. They tend to be bigger as well as the monsters are at the surface feeding on anything that moves. Then as the water warms the giants head into deeper water to feed on herring. Deke is pictured here saying hi to you all and waiting for you to come up and see him. Couldn't resisit throwing the stick in the water to see if he'd retreive. He did as any good dog would.

Beautiful Day

It is a nice 70 degrees today. In fact its been that all week. Very unusual. The good news is the snow is almost gone. About 4 inches of ice left on the lake but it is melting very fast. I give it 4 more days of this and it will be gone. Three weeks ahead of the last two years. My boat is waiting for launch and to go after those fierce spring time Northerns. The Walleye are moving into the creeks for spawning and you can watch them at night with a flash light. You can understand why the season is closed now for them. You can pratically walk across the creek on them if you wanted too. We saw our first eagle today soaring over the lake and the grouse are thumping there chest everywhere. Moose & bear are a common sight daily. The geese are flying over on there way to there summer home along the James Bay Coastline.
